From start to finish – it was perfect!
W OW! What an event!… that was my first reaction to the 100km del Sahara race. I have been running marathons for over ten years and I wanted a new challenge and a little adventure at the same time. I made contact with Susan and a few days later we had our first Skype chat. She was so enthusiastic and motivational, that I had no doubt in my mind that I wanted to do the 100km del Sahara stage race. I discussed the event and cost with my husband, Stephen and we agreed to go ahead!
Although I am a Personal Trainer, I really wanted a mentor… and who better than Susan Nowell? So, I also signed up for the twelve-week training plan. I felt confident and reassured with Susan’s support, which was consistent every day for three months. I found I could discuss anything with Susan, which took away a lot of the stress and anxiety one may feel doing such an event for the first time.
The training plans from Susan came via email everyday and I had five skype calls included in my package, which were very useful indeed. The first few weeks of the plan were manageable and I enjoyed them enormously. I was excited to be training for such an event. As the weeks drew nearer to the even,t the training became increasingly difficult and time-consuming. At one stage, I was running twenty miles on Saturday and 14 miles on Sunday, after a 40 miler week which also included strength and plyometric training.
This I did find a challenge, physically and mentally. However, I was very committed and enjoyed the different training elements. I gained strength and I must say, I felt extremely fit and ready to take on the Sahara or anything else! I truly believe, Personal Trainer or not, I would not have been in such great shape without the help of Susan’s training plans, her encouragement and belief in my abilities. Susan was always positive and constantly in touch. The whole experience has been surprising, challenging, enlightening and so much fun.
From start to finish – it was perfect! The training with Susan gave me such a fantastic base and the organization and staff were such wonderful characters, they always made me smile. The running…well, what can I say, there’s nothing like the feeling of running free – just you and the elements, no cars, building, noise and very few people. It was heaven. Would I do it again?? – Yes, but with a little more conviction to win! ”

I received Susan’s e-mail and phone number few weeks before the leaving for the desert experience. The Zitoway organization had told me that we would be working together as physiotherapists for the runners during the week of the 100km del Sahara stage race. This was my first experience in such context, so I was a little bit nervous, while Susan had participated in the 100km del Sahara race 3 times as a runner, (winning the race once) and twice as staff physiotherapist.
When I first contacted Susan, she immediately made me feel part of the project. She told me not to worry and that she was happy to work with me… this was great! We organized everything before the race by phone and e-mail. During the desert race days, we spent much time together at race aid stations and while we were waiting for the athletes, I asked her so many questions about our profession! She has a lot of experience, not just as physiotherapist, but also as sports trainer.
She taught me many things about training and I thought it would be a great idea to introduce it in the PERCORSO FORMATIVO at Italian Universities for physiotherapists. I think it’s very important to know how to avoid athletic injuries through proper training. Susan was really prepared on this concept and also physically trained to be able to show me how to do some training exercises. We worked every day of the stage race in the same tent and she answered every question I had during the treatments. I learned a lot from her, especially in kinesiotaping. Now I can say that we are friends as well as colleagues. Thank you Susan!.”

I give my highest endorsement of Dr. Susan Nowell
I have known Susan for over five years. In that time I have worked with her and come to know her on many levels–as a very knowledgeable and incredibly professional physical therapist, as a dedicated and trusted member of a support crew for an endurance race I did, and as a superb all-around endurance athlete.
While living in New York City, I had my own fitness and training business. On a daily basis, over the course of a year, I shared working space with Susan. I was able to observe her methods, therapies, and client interaction. Her work was always professional and she was one of the best members of the PT staff. I was so confident in her that I referred my clients (as well as fellow athletes) exclusively to her.
I had the pleasure of sharing a few endurance workouts with Susan. I was always impressed with how mentally and physically tough she was while still maintaining a calm and pleasant demeanor. She pushes herself and inspires those around her to do the same.
In 2009 I put together an effort to compete in the Furnace 508 Endurance Bike Race. This race is known as the toughest 48-hours in sport. Susan volunteered to be both my physical therapist as well as crew member. She was with me throughout training, helping me with recovery and injury prevention. At one point, about two weeks before the race I felt a slight pull/tear in my calf. I was barely able to walk and getting on the bike was an issue—I was very worried I would have to drop out of the race. Susan made it her mission to get me through the injury. Her keen skills allowed me to quickly get back to training and to manage the injury. Once the team left for the race Susan assumed another duty as a support crew member. Throughout my race (41hours to complete) Susan was steady and motivated. We all operated on zero sleep and Susan’s mental and physical toughness allowed her to be an anchor for my effort. At every break she was there, massaging and stretching my body as well as ensuring I had the proper clothing, nutrition, hydration, etc. My success in completing the event was a direct result of Susan the PT and Susan the support crew member.
I cannot say enough good about Susan Nowell. She is remarkable on many levels.

I started working with Dr. Susan Nowell three months before refereeing at NBA Summer League, a premiere evaluation event where I would be working to earn a position as a full-time NBA referee. I approach my work holistically and going into the summer I wanted to be in my best possible physical and cognitive condition to earn the job. It’s always been important to me to maintain a high level of fitness and it was critical for me push beyond what I’d always done. I decided to work with a fitness and physio expert, Dr. Susan Nowell, and it was one of the best things I could have done for myself to be at the top of my game.
Susan helped me specifically define my training goals and created a 3-month training plan that was tailored to my work as a referee. We live across the country from each other, so we did everything through Skype sessions, phone calls, text messages, and emails. She was incredibly accessible and hands-on, continuing to tweak the combination of running, swimming, biking, strength training, plyometrics, agility and rest based on how my body was responding and my schedule. She introduced me to new training methods and also reconnected me with training in the pool I’d enjoyed as a child, bringing a new vitality to my workouts.
Susan was encouraging, challenging, and committed. Those intangibles, coupled with her skill and expertise, were part of a winning matrix that helped prepare me to perform at my best as a referee during NBA Summer League.

I ran 4 days in the Sahara desert! Yes, me…and I am definitely not a professional athlete. I am a 50+ year old woman with a full time job, who wanted to achieve a fitness goal. With the help and guidance of Susan Nowell, I successfully and jubilantly completed a the 100k Del Sahara! You can do it too!
Susan was my training guide, my mentor, my inspiration. She designed and prepared a 12 week training schedule for me that included swimming, calisthenics, and running. I followed her guidance. Training runs in the cold and snow and ice of winter in Missouri, USA are a far cry from the temps and landscape of Africa, but with the help of Susan, the training prepared me to accomplish my goal.By the end of the 12 weeks my body was conditioned in a new way. Off to Africa. Amazing landscape! Tantalizing sky! More stars at night than I thought possible to see with the naked eye. My time there was blessed with a full moon that lit up the sand dunes for miles and miles. The race organizers were warm and generous. All the workers were like a family who encouraged and cheered for me (and every racer) throughout each day – at the start, during the race, at meal time, in the medic tent (once for my blisters), sitting around a campfire, all day long! I met wonderful people from countries all around the world. The 100k Del Sahara was a challenge, an accomplishment, an emotionally nurturing experience. Do you have a fitness goal? Want a fitness goal? Susan Nowell is your ticket to success.
